Clarence Gagnon (Canadian, 1881–1942) is best known for his paintings inspired by the landscape and rural life of his native Quebec. However, the artist may be most beloved for his illustrations of Maria Chapdelaine, painstakingly printed for the Mornay edition (1933) of the novel by Louis Hémon, which captured the spirit of Canada and French Canadian life. Highlighted are twelve of the fifty-four original paintings in the McMichael Canadian Art Collection.
