During the golden age of rail travel, a wealthy traveler could book an entire itinerary, from Liverpool to the Rockies, through a single rail company that operated not only luxury trains, but also steamships and hotels. By the mid-1920s, two companies came to dominate transcontinental rail travel in Canada: Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railways. These companies advertised their access to charming lakeside villages and mountain retreats in the wilderness, hoping to entice Americans to head north and Europeans to venture across the Atlantic. Outdoor sports and recreation, and celebrations such as Indian Days, were also popular subjects. They even promoted southbound travel to special events such as the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago. Though often little is known about the artists who created these posters, they remain as idyllic pictures of a bygone era.
